20 dead in New York state limo crash
Twenty people died Saturday after a limousine crashed into another vehicle and pedestrians in New York state, authorities said Sunday.
New York State Police told the Albany Times Union that a limo sped down a hill and collided with another vehicle in Schoharie County, which is near Albany. The limo also hit and killed bystanders in the area, the newspaper reported.
The limo was carrying a wedding party, according to the Times Union.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident, police told the newspaper. Police aren’t sure how many of the victims were bystanders and how many were in the vehicles.
The bystanders were customers at the Apple Barrel Country Store, store manager Jessica Kirby told The New York Times.
“That limo was coming down that hill probably over 60 mph,” Kirby told the Times.
“I don’t want to describe the scene,” she added. “It’s not something I want to think about.”
Kirby also told the Times that Columbus Day Weekend is one of the store’s busiest of the year, with customers coming from New York City, New Jersey and Albany.
“A lot of people from New York City come up and they do the country things, the apple picking and the sort,” she said.
Police said they are not releasing names of the victims until they’re able to reach and notify family members.
Police will provide further details during a press conference later Sunday, according to the Times Union.
