Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) described on Friday night his experience being confronted by protesters at a restaurant in Washington, D.C., last week.

Cruz and his wife Heidi Cruz were chased out of Fiola, an upscale Italian restaurant, on Sept. 25 by a crowd protesting the senator’s support of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court.

The Texas senator told Sean Hannity on Fox News that they were going to dinner when “unfortunately, somehow, the protesters were waiting for us as we walked in.”

“They surrounded us, they screamed at us,” he said.

{mosads}”They basically shut down the restaurant and made it impossible to have dinner.”

Cruz also revealed that he was confronted when leaving.

“We left the restaurant, we went out the door, and around a back alley and this mob of about 15 screaming leftist protesters chased Heidi and me down the alley,” he said.

The couple was eventually let in to the kitchen through a back entrance, where they hid until police arrived.

“We took shelter in the kitchen with this screaming mob outside,” Cruz explained.

He and his wife then returned to finish their meal.

“Per our policy for events of this nature, police were called and the guest escorted to privacy,” owner and chef Fabio Trabocchi said in a statement last week.

“When the situation resolved a few minutes later, our guests returned to thank the staff for their support and to finish their exceptional meal,” he added.
