Massachusetts mayor boycotts Sam Adams after cofounder thanked Trump for tax cuts

Joseph Curtatone, the mayor of Somerville, Mass., said Sunday that he will never drink Sam Adams beer again after the cofounder of the Boston brewery thanked President Trump for a corporate tax cut.

Curtatone linked to an article published by the Boston Business Journal that detailed a dinner where Jim Koch, who co-founded Boston Beer, thanked the president for the GOP-authored tax cut that he said would help his company compete against foreign brewers.

In another tweet posted on Sunday evening, Curtatone addressed Koch directly.

According to the Business Journal, Koch was one of 13 corporate executives who dined with the president at his golf resort in New Jersey on Tuesday.

{mosads}Koch reportedly claimed during the dinner that the president’s tax-reform measure “was a very big deal” for his company, while noting that “85 percent of the beer made in the United States is owned by foreign companies.”

“I mean, Americans — I’m the largest American-owned brewery at 2 percent market share. We were paying 38 percent taxes … and competing against people who were paying 20. And now we have a level playing field, and we’re going to kick their ass,” Koch said at the dinner. 

“Wow. But you’ve done a great job,” Trump reportedly said. “Great job.”
