Emmett Till memorial hit with bullets again just a month after being replaced

A sign marking where Emmett Till’s body was found in Mississippi has reportedly been hit with bullets again.

The New York Times reported on Monday that the sign, which marks where Till’s body was found in the Tallahatchie River in 1955, was shot up on July 26, a day after what would have been Till’s 77th birthday and just 35 days after the sign had been replaced.

“The Emmett Till Interpretive Center is committed to seeing the sign replaced,” the center’s co-founder, Patrick Weems, told the Clarion-Ledger.

“We have already begun plans to replace the sign and have notified local law enforcement about the vandalism,” Weems continued.

{mosads}According to the local paper, if the center were to replace Till’s sign again, it would mark the fourth time. 

“Our mission is to continue to tell the truth as it concerns the Emmett Till story,” Weems said. “We are saddened by these events but are unwavering in our commitment to truth and racial reconciliation.” 

Till, a 14-year-old black boy from Chicago, was killed in 1955 after a white woman claimed he whistled at her and attempted to grab her inside a store in Money, Miss. 

Carolyn Donham, the white woman at the center of the case, admitted to lying about the events leading up to Till’s lynching in an explosive book by Timothy B. Tyson titled “The Blood of Emmett Till,” published last year. 

Federal investigators have since reopened the investigation into his lynching, citing “new information.”
