Pence heckled over Trump immigration policy: ‘Where are the children?’

Vice President Pence had just begun delivering remarks on Wednesday at an event in Kansas City, Mo., when he was cut off by protesters heckling him over President Trump’s immigration policies.

“Where are the children? Shame on you!” a first protester shouted, referencing the Trump administration’s zero tolerance policy which led to thousands of migrant family separations.

 

In a video of the incident, the protester is seen being removed from the event as others in the crowd booed him, chanting “USA! USA!” 

According to The Kansas City Star, another protester rose up to heckle Pence shortly after the first man was removed. The second protester was also removed from the audience of more than 550 people, who were mostly Republican supporters.

The demonstrations come as the Trump administration continues to grapple with a court-ordered deadline to reunite hundreds of migrant children who were separated from their families at the U.S.–Mexico border under the administration’s original zero tolerance policy. 

As of Monday, the administration was reportedly able to reunite an estimated 54 of the 102 named children under 5 years old by the Tuesday deadline.

The exact number of children said to have been returned to their families on Tuesday remains unclear, according to The New York Times.
