A month before deadly school shooting, Texas students protested gun violence

Less than a month before Friday’s deadly shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas, students there participated in a national walkout protesting school shootings in solidarity with their peers across the country.

Now, after nine Santa Fe High students have been confirmed dead and more injured, photos from the walkout have been picking up traction on social media.

Holding signs that read “Santa Fe High School SAYS #NeverAgain,” students reportedly sat outside in silence for 17 minutes on April 20, the 19th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School. The Colorado massacre was the deadliest U.S. high school shooting in history until 17 people were killed by a gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., this February.

Twenty-eight days after their protest, Santa Fe High students became the latest victims.

So far, 10 people, including one teacher, have been confirmed killed and as many wounded in the Texas massacre.

Seventeen-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis has been charged with capital murder and is being held without bond in Galveston County Jail.

President Trump on Friday condemned the shooting, calling it an “absolutely horrific attack.”

“This has been going on too long in our country, too many years, too many decades now,” Trump said during a prison reform event at the White House.

“My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others,” he said.

Trump made similar comments after the Parkland shooting in February. 

In the shooting’s aftermath, Trump vowed to support new gun laws and take on the National Rifle Association, though the plan that was ultimately released from the White House did not include a number of his initial pledges.
