46 percent of Americans support government jobs guarantee: poll

Nearly half of Americans would support a government program meant to guarantee a job to every citizen, a new survey finds.

The poll from the conservative-leaning Rasmussen Reports released Wednesday finds that 46 percent of respondents would support a plan by the federal government to guarantee all Americans a job that includes health insurance benefits.

The news comes on the heels of several top possible 2020 Democratic presidential candidates endorsing the idea, including Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

{mosads}Booker has already announced a plan for guaranteed employment, while Sanders is preparing to announce a similar program in the coming weeks. Gillibrand has indicated her support for the issue in statements.

Other liberal causes also faired relatively well in the survey. Forty-four percent of Americans said they would support a ban on plastic shopping bags in their home state for environmental reasons.

President Trump’s approval rating is evenly split in the poll. Forty-nine percent of Americans say they support the job Trump is doing, compared to 49 percent who disapprove. However, more Americans strongly disapprove of the job he is doing compared to strongly approve, at 39 percent versus 32 percent respectively.

Rasmussen’s daily tracking poll contacts 500 Americans per night and is reported over a three-day rolling average basis. It has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
