A World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) world champion on Tuesday won the Republican primary for mayor of Knox County, Tenn., by 17 votes.
Glenn Jacobs, known as “Kane” in the pro-wrestling community, appears to have secured the nomination by a slim margin with 100 percent of precincts reporting, WATE in Knoxville reported.
“Thanks to everyone who helped win this historic victory!!” Jacobs wrote on Twitter Tuesday. “The people who cast a ballot for me, my great team, my wonderful volunteers. Looking forward to VICTORY in the general election!”
Jacobs ran on a platform similar to President Reagan’s, according to his website. He focused on low taxes, education and new job growth.
Jacobs, who launched his bid for office in March 2017, began his WWE career after college and wrestled in all 50 U.S. states and more 40 countries.
“Millions of people have watched me perform live. Millions more have watched on TV,” Jacobs wrote on his campaign page. “I have been honored to work with some of the greatest entertainers on the planet. Who would have thought all this could happen to a guy like me? Well, it could only happen in America.”
According to his WWE profile, “Kane is a monstrous abomination that seems to have been extracted directly from your childhood nightmares.”
Jacobs was supported by other WWE stars, like “The Big Show” Paul Wight, Nattie and WWE official Charles Robinson, on the campaign trail and on social media.
