Columbine students to hold 30 seconds of silence to honor Parkland, Columbine victims

Students at Columbine High School in Colorado plan to observe 30 seconds of silence Wednesday to honor those who died in last month’s Parkland, Fla., school shooting and the 1999 Columbine shooting.

According to The New York Times, The students will leave their school Wednesday as part of the National School Walkout, which is occurring one month after a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, killing 17 people.

The students at Columbine High School will observe the 30 seconds of silence to remember both the 17 dead in Florida and the 13 who were killed at Columbine High School in 1999.

Students at two high schools nearby are also planning to take part in the walkouts.

“We saw people in classrooms just like ours, wearing clothes just like ours. They looked like they could have been any one of us at any of our schools,” said Sam Craig, 15, a lead organizer at one of the area’s high schools.

“And seeing them lying in pools of blood was really powerful for us.”

Students across the country plan to walk out of their schools Wednesday to protest gun violence and demand action from lawmakers.

Gun control has become a central issue in the country since the Florida school shooting. Students have led the charge, rallying lawmakers and demanding that Congress pass new gun laws to keep their schools safe.
