Nunberg defends Bannon: ‘Steve got Trump’s fat ass elected’

Former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg defended former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon, saying Bannon was the one who got President Trump elected. 

“Steve got Trump’s fat ass elected,” Nunberg told New York magazine in an interview. “Trump would’ve lost by 15 points had Steve not gotten involved in the campaign.”

Bannon left his post as the executive chair of Breitbart News in August 2016 to join the Trump campaign, and was eventually made Trump’s chief strategist. He left that position last year.

Since then, however, he has had a falling out with Trump after he was quoted in a book by New York media writer Michael Wolff speaking critically of Trump and his family.

Nunberg spent most of Monday fielding a series of media interviews, in which he lashed out at Trump and the White House and insisted that he would defy a grand jury subpoena from special counsel Robert Mueller.

He later told The Associated Press that he would, in fact, cooperate with Mueller’s subpoena.

He suggested in an interview with MSNBC that President Trump himself “may have done something during the election,” but acknowledged that he wasn’t sure.

And in another interview with NY1 in New York, Nunberg attacked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, calling her a “fat slob.”

He doubled down on that insult in his interview with New York magazine, and explained that he called her a “slob” because she “does Trump’s dirty business.”

The White House dismissed Nunberg’s assertions on Monday, with Sanders noting in a press briefing that he had never worked for the White House. 

“He hasn’t worked at the White House, so I certainly can’t speak to him or the lack of knowledge that he clearly has,” she said.
