Kimmel: We make films like ‘Call Me By Your Name’ to upset Mike Pence

Academy Awards host Jimmy Kimmel took a shot at Vice President Pence’s stance on LGBTQ rights by saying the movie “Call Me By Your Name” was made to upset him.

The movie, which is up for the award for Best Picture, tells the story of a 17-year-old boy discovering his sexuality in 1980s Italy through his romantic relationship with an older man.

Kimmel pointed out during his opening monologue that the film wasn’t a box office smash, saying that only two of the nine films up for the ceremony’s most prestigious award grossed more than $100 million at the box office.

{mosads}“That’s not the point,” Kimmel said. “We don’t make films like ‘Call Me By Your Name’ for money. We make them to upset Mike Pence.”

Pence has repeatedly clashed with the LGBTQ community over the course of his political career, and President Trump once reportedly joked that his vice president “wants to hang” all gay people.

Gay Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon, who also attended the Oscars, turned down an opportunity to meet with the vice president during the Winter Olympics in South Korea over Pence’s views.
