A California lawmaker ripped President Trump for threatening to pull immigration enforcement officers out of her state in retaliation for sanctuary policies.
Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) took to Twitter on Friday, writing “#California: 6th largest economy in the world, top farming state, & a hub of progress in science & tech. All this while also dropping murder & crime rates to historic lows. Trump’s idea of “helping” #CA is terrorizing & tearing families apart — we sure as hell don’t need that.”
Gov. Jerry Brown (D) last year signed legislation turning California into a sanctuary state. The laws bars state law enforcement officials from complying with detainer requests from federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, among other things.
On Thursday, Trump said the policies of not cooperating with ICE operations were “a disgrace.”
“If we ever pulled our ICE out, if we ever said, ‘hey, let California alone, let them figure it out for themselves,’ in two months they’d be begging for us to come back, they would be begging. And you know what, I’m thinking about doing it,” Trump said.
Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan previously warned California to “hold on tight” for more ICE operations.
But on Wednesday, he said the agency conducts “targeted law enforcement operations,” not raids.
Trump reignited calls for his border wall on Friday morning to fight against MS-13 gang members.
