King: I wanted to run against Kennedy

If Gov. David Paterson (D-NY) had picked Caroline Kennedy to fill Hillary Clinton’s seate seat, Rep. Peter King (R-NY) says he “was going to file within seconds” to run against her. King made the comments in an interview with the Long Island Sentinel.

A Kennedy appointment would have attracted national attention, King said, drawing attention to the 2010 election and giving her potential Republican opponent the opportunity to raise considerable funds.

“She would have generated tremendous publicity for the race,” said King. “I would have been able to get a tremendous amount of financing for the race. And I knew that she was not a strong candidate. It would have made it very competitive, and I think I would have won.”

King said he’s still considering a race against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) but hasn’t made up his mind yet.
