Donald Trump Jr. slammed U.S. Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon on Twitter after the Olympian said he did not want his Olympic experience to be about Vice President Pence.
“Really? Then Perhaps you shouldn’t have spent the past few weeks talking about him. I haven’t heard him mention you once???” Trump Jr. said in a tweet on Wednesday.
Trump Jr. was responding to recent comments from Rippon, who became the first openly gay athlete selected to a U.S. Winter Olympic team, in which he said he did not want the attention on his comments about Pence to distract from his teammates.
Despite Trump Jr.’s claims, Pence did address Rippon’s criticism of him on LGBTQ issues, tweeting directly at the athlete last week.
Rippon said in January that he disagreed with the Trump administration’s values. He also said that Pence “doesn’t really stand for anything I believe in,” asserting that the vice president has supported “gay conversion therapy.”
Pence’s office has denied the vice president believes in gay conversion therapy.
USA Today reported earlier this month that Rippon refused to meet with Pence after the vice president’s staff reached out to the figure skater following his criticism.
