Former Rep. Sweeney arrested for drunken driving

Former Rep. John Sweeney (R-N.Y.) was arrested early Sunday morning for driving while intoxicated, according to the Post Star.

Clifton Park troopers stopped Sweeney, 53, around 3:30 a.m. on State Route 9 for speeding, police said.

After conducting a preliminary investigation following the speeding arrest, Sweeney was taken into custody and charged with felony DWI.

Sweeney refused subsequent sobriety tests and was processed at the Clifton Park station, police said. He was arraigned in the Town of Clifton Park Court by Town Justice Robert Rybak and remanded to the custody of the Saratoga County jail pending $2,000 cash and $5,000 bond bail.

Sweeney, of course, lost his House seat to now Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) in 2006 after reports surfaced alleging he beat his wife. Since leaving office, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated in 2007.
