Ex-Sheriff David Clarke: Trump only one who ‘cares about black American citizens’

David Clarke, the former sheriff of Milwaukee County, Wis., ripped Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) on Tuesday, accusing him of “twiddling his thumbs” and saying that “only [President Trump] cares about black American citizens.”

“If @SenatorDurbin truly cared about black people he wouldn’t sit by twiddling his thumbs as black people in his city of Chicago are slaughtered by violent crime in record numbers,” Clarke, a staunch supporter of Trump, tweeted. “Do those black lives matter Dick? Only @realDonaldTrump cares about black AMERICAN citizens.”

Clarke’s comments come as Durbin and the White House clash over a bipartisan immigration deal in the fallout from Trump reportedly referring to Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as “shithole countries.”

{mosads}Durbin, who was present in the bipartisan immigration meeting and confirmed Trump’s reported remarks last week, on Monday called on the White House to release tapes from the meeting.

Trump, who has been criticized by both parties for the alleged remarks, attacked Durbin on Twitter Monday, saying that “Dicky Durbin totally misrepresented what was said at the DACA meeting.” 

The Illinois Democrat said Tuesday that a bipartisan group of senators would release their immigration bill on Wednesday despite Trump’s pushback.

The Senate group’s bill is expected to tie a pathway to citizenship to roughly $2.7 billion in border security.

It’s also expected to shuffle some of the diversity lottery visas toward Temporary Protected Status countries and make changes to family-based immigration that would be limited to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and their family members.

Trump has blasted the bipartisan group’s bill, saying Durbin “blew” the chances of an agreement on the Obama-era DACA program, which allows certain young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children to work and go to school in the U.S. 

“The Democrats want to shut down the Government over Amnesty for all and Border Security. … We need a merit based system of immigration, and we need it now! No more dangerous Lottery,” Trump said in a tweet on Tuesday.
