Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu (Calif.) on Saturday continued his assault on Republicans who have publicly questioned the integrity of top officials at the Justice Department and the FBI, urging Republicans to trust agents who Lieu says clearly hold conservative views.
Lieu argued on Twitter that the leadership at the FBI has Republican credentials.
“I trust these 3 Republicans,” Lieu said, naming FBI Director Christopher Wray, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and special counsel Robert Mueller. “The GOP should too.”
“#Mueller investigation led by 3 officials,” Lieu tweeted. “Deputy AG Rosenstein, a Republican appointed twice by GOP Presidents … Mueller, a Republican & Bronze Star recipient [and] FBI Director Wray, a Republican who donated $39k to GOP candidates.”
{mosads}The lawmaker’s tweet linked to an Associated Press report on a letter signed by 22 former U.S. attorneys that urges Trump to allow Mueller’s team to conclude its investigation free from “fear of reprisal.”
Lieu took to the House floor earlier this week to condemn congressional Republicans and Trump administration officials for casting doubt on the political biases of Mueller’s team, as well as other top officials at the Justice Department and FBI.
In a floor speech on Wednesday, Lieu warned that President Trump risks following in the footsteps of former President Nixon, who resigned in disgrace, if he plans to fire the special counsel.
“If Donald Trump wants to take the first footsteps of Richard Nixon, he’s certainly welcome to try,” Lieu said. “But it will not end well for him.”
The White House has repeatedly denied that Trump is considering ordering his top officials to fire Mueller, and says that Trump expects the investigation to wrap up soon.
“For the one-thousandth time, we have no intentions of firing Bob Mueller,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Fox News.
