Poll: Majority oppose same-sex marriage

A majority of Americans continues to oppose same-sex marriage, according to a Gallup poll released Wednesday.

The poll comes on the heels of the California Supreme Court’s ruling on Tuesday to uphold Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the Golden State.

The Gallup poll found that 57 percent of respondents oppose same-sex marriage while 40 percent support it.

Those findings show little change on the issue.

There is a significant divide on the issue between self-identified liberals, moderates and conservatives.

But there is slightly less of a partisan divide. Fifty-five percent of Democrats approve of same-sex marriage, while 45 percent of independents and 20 percent of Republicans feel the same.

More striking, though, is the generational divide on the issue. Respondents between 18 and 29 years old were the only age group where a higher percentage same-sex marriage than oppose it.

There was a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points in the survey.
