Spanish police in the town of Cambrils on Friday shot dead five attackers wearing fake suicide belts after a car ran down and injured six civilians and a police officer, one day after a similar attack left 14 dead in Barcelona.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which have led to three arrests.

The driver from Thursday’s deadly van attack, who escaped on foot, was still at large, according to local reports.

Police say the attacks — an an explosion earlier this week in the same region — are connected.

{mosads}Authorities said attackers in Cambrils, which is approximately 80 miles south of Barcelona, plowed into a group of tourists and locals near the town’s boardwalk with a blue Audi 3 before being shot.

The condition of those struck by the car was not immediately known, but reports emerged Friday that Barcelona’s death toll had risen as a 14th person succumbed to their injuries.

Joaquin Forn, interior minister for the Catalonia region, told local radio that police “were unable to shoot” the van driver on Thursday because of the size of the crowd.

“We don’t know if the driver is still in Barcelona or not, or what direction he fled in,” Forn said, as reported by The Associated Press.
