First lady Melania Trump also attended the brief ceremony, where the president pinned the medal on Sgt. First Class Alvaro Barrientos’ lapel, according to a pool report.

“When I heard about this I wanted to do it myself,” Trump said before taking a picture with Barrientos and his wife Tammy. “Congratulations. Tremendous.”

Barrientos was wounded during a deployment in Afghanistan, and was awarded the Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained, a White House official said.
