John Kerry to teach at Yale on global issues

Former Secretary of State John Kerry is taking on a post-Foggy Bottom teaching gig.

The former Massachusetts senator and one-time Democratic presidential candidate will join Yale University as a Distinguished Fellow for Global Affairs, responsible for running the Kerry Initiative, a program focused on addressing global challenges, according to a university press release.

Kerry, who served as the United States’ top diplomat during former President Barack Obama’s second term, earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale in 1966.

“This is where I first raised my hand as a junior and pledged to defend the Constitution, and it’s where I first debated and struggled with issues of war and peace,” Kerry said in a statement.

“Teaching, researching, convening, engaging and collaborating with young people and together wrestling with the world’s most complex issues is an exciting chapter in the journey that began for me in New Haven,” he continued.

In his role at Yale, Kerry will work with other researchers on issues such as climate change and the rise of “violent extremism,” according to the school. He is slated to lead a student seminar during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Kerry isn’t the only Obama alum with post-administration plans in academia. Former Vice President Joe Biden has also taken on roles at the University of Delaware and the University of Pennsylvania.
