Sen. Cory Booker will attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
The New Jersey Democrat made the announcement after speaking at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast organized by the National Action Network, USA Today reported.
“I respect everybody’s choice in this. My personal feeling is this is the peaceful transition of power,” he reportedly said Monday.
“Barack Obama will be up there, handing off the reins of our country and I feel … it’s important for us to be up there. This doesn’t mean I agree with Donald Trump.”
{mosads}Booker made headlines last week when he became the first senator to ever testify against another sitting senator’s Cabinet nomination, speaking out against the confirmation of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) for attorney general.
“Sen. Sessions has not demonstrated a commitment to a central requisite of the job to aggressively pursue the congressional mandate of civil rights, equal rights and justice for all of our citizens,” Booker told members of the Senate Judiciary Committee last week.
The unprecedented move earned Booker criticism from colleagues who accused him of using the hearing to score political points ahead of a potential presidential run in 2020.
