Brazil’s Senate impeaches president

Brazil’s Senate voted Wednesday to remove President Dilma Rousseff from office, according to news reports.

{mosads}The Senate passed the impeachment resolution 61-20 after months of accusations that Rousseff illegally manipulated the country’s budget.

Brazil Sen. Aecio Neves, who lost the 2014 presidential election to Rousseff, said the consequences of her crimes have been felt nationwide.

“The most perverse consequence of the actions of the president is that 12 million are unemployed, 5 million since she was re-elected,” Neves said, according to Fox News.

The BBC reports that the impeachment ends 13 years in power for the left-wing Workers’ Party.

Vice President Michel Temer, from the center-right Democratic Movement Party, will serve out the rest of Rousseff’s term, which ends January 2019.

Despite the allegations against Rousseff in recent months, she continued to deny any wrongdoing to the Senate.

“I know I will be judged, but my conscience is clear. I did not commit a crime,” she said on Monday, calling the impeachment process “an irony of history.”
