North Carolina governor makes bathroom joke at Trump rally
North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) appeared to make light of the debate over a controversial law in his state that requires transgender people to use the public bathrooms that correspond to their assigned gender at birth.
McCrory talked about safety in his opening remarks to a large crowd gathered in Winston-Salem, N.C., pointing out nearby exits.
{mosads}”And if any of you need to use the restrooms,” McCrory continued, pausing as the crowd erupted with cheers.
The North Carolina law has caught considerable flak for months, both in the Tar Heel state and nationally.
The NBA announced last week that it was pulling its 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte response to the law.
North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, a Democrat running for governor, released a campaign video on Monday showing GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump praising McCrory for having done “a fantastic job” in the state despite controversy over the law.
