Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Thursday came out against removing former President Andrew Jackson from the front of the $20 bill, saying “pure political correctness” is behind the move.
“Andrew Jackson had a great history, and I think it’s very rough when you take somebody off the bill,” Trump said during a town hall interview on NBC’s “Today” show.
{mosads}”Andrew Jackson had a history of tremendous success for the country,” Trump added.
The Treasury Department announced Wednesday that it will replace Jackson on the front of the $20 bill with Harriet Tubman, the African-American abolitionist and Civil War spy. Jackson’s image will appear on the backside of the bill with an image of the White House.
“I think Harriet Tubman is fantastic. I would love to leave Andrew Jackson and see if we can maybe come up with another denomination. Maybe we do a $2 bill,” Trump said Thursday.
“I don’t like seeing it. Yes, I think it’s pure political correctness,” he added.
“I would love to see another denomination. … I think it would be more appropriate,” Trump said, echoing the calls from his endorser Ben Carson to find another way to honor Tubman.
The Treasury announced that Alexander Hamilton’s image will remain on the front of the $10 bill after outcry about removing the first Treasury secretary’s image.
“The Broadway play sort of saved that,” Trump remarked.
