Senator’s convoy charged by elephants
On a foreign excursion in Africa to draw attention to animal poaching, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and his convoy were charged by a herd of elephants, according to ABC News.
{mosads}Flake and his crew were visiting Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia last week to see firsthand the effect of wildlife trafficking and on one occasion got too close to several elephants protecting their young.
The elephants were captured on video charging the caravan, flaring their ears and trumpeting to scare the intruders away.
Flake, chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Africa, and Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) penned an op-ed for CNN highlighting the poaching criminal enterprise.
“During our visit to Kenya, we saw the devastating impact of wildlife trafficking on some of the most iconic animals in some of the most beautiful places on Earth,” Coons and Flake wrote.
They were accompanied on the trip by Sens. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).
