Poll: 4 in 10 Americans favor Canadian border wall
About four in 10 Americans say in a new poll that if a wall is good for the United States’s southern border with Mexico, another wall should be erected on the northern border with Canada.
Forty-one percent of U.S. adults offered that opinion in the Bloomberg poll released Thursday, which described the border wall with Mexico as one made of brick and mortar.
{mosads}A majority of Americans surveyed, 55 percent and 56 percent, said there should not be a wall on the U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada, respectively.
Whether the U.S. should establish a wall along its border with Canada came up late last month when GOP presidential candidate Scott Walker appeared to float the idea during an interview.
The Wisconsin governor, who has since dropped out of the 2016 race due to plummeting poll numbers, later walked back talk of a wall on the northern border.
Bloomberg’s poll this week finds that while illegal immigration has become a flashpoint in the 2016 race, just 7 percent of Americans listed it as the top issue currently facing the country.
Unemployment and jobs (20 percent), a decline in real income for U.S. workers (14 percent), healthcare (11 percent) and the federal deficit (10 percent) were the top issues.
Illegal immigration has become a major topic in part due to rhetoric from businessman Donald Trump, who has led the GOP field for weeks and said he would build a wall on Mexico’s border.
The survey of 1,001 U.S. adults was conducted Sept. 18-21 with a margin of error of 3.1 points.
