Sunday shows preview: GOP candidates make August push

Donald Trump and the Republican presidential candidates chasing him are hitting the talk show circuit Sunday to try to gain momentum as the race heads into fall.

Following an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” last week, nomination front-runner Trump is stopping by ABC to chat with George Stephanopoulos on “This Week.” He will also appear on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

{mosads}GOP White House hopefuls Carly Fiorina, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee all have scheduled appearances this week. Nearly half of the 17 Republican candidates will be on one of the five Sunday shows this week.

In poll after poll, Trump has held a strong lead over the Republican presidential pack — forcing many of the other candidates to stand behind his policies or come out strongly against him in order to differentiate themselves.

NBC’s “Meet the Press”: Host Chuck Todd will interview Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive. California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) is also scheduled to speak about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s email server controversy.

ABC’s “This Week”: Trump will be joined by Walker, a top-tier GOP 2016 candidate, according to polling averages, and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who is vying for the Democratic nomination.

CBS’s “Face the Nation”: In addition to Trump, host John Dickerson will talk to Cruz and Christie in pre-taped interviews that took place at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines — where most presidential candidates are making appearances to try to appeal to the early-voting state.

Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns will also be on the show to discuss his 1990 documentary series “The Civil War,” which has been remastered for its 25th anniversary. It will air on PBS on Sept. 7.

“Fox News Sunday”: Former Bush administration Attorney General Michael Mukasey will likely be talking about Clinton’s emails. The program will also feature Huckabee as well as Draft Biden 2016 senior adviser Josh Alcorn, who will discuss rumors that Vice President Biden is mulling a White House run.

CNN’s “State of the Union”: Carson, whose presidential campaign is surging, headlines CNN’s show. Former Sen. Jim Webb (Va.), a Democratic presidential hopeful, will appear as well, along with Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump’s campaign manager.
