GOP governor-elect: Obama lawsuit about abuse of power
Gov.-elect Greg Abbott (R-Texas) said Sunday that his recent lawsuit against President Obama is about more than the recent actions on immigration.
{mosads}“This issue in this lawsuit is not about immigration. The issue in this lawsuit is about abuse of executive power,” Abbott, currently the Texas attorney general, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Abbott’s appearance underscored the challenges that Texas faces on immigration issues. The governor-elect said that this summer’s influx of child immigrants put a strain on his state’s budget, and called once more for stronger border security.
But Abbott, who has now sued Obama more than 30 times, also said broader immigration reform was up to Washington, and didn’t dismiss the idea that an increase in immigrants could help his state’s economy.
“If bringing more immigrants here is the appropriate thing to do, then what Congress needs to do, and what the president needs to do, is figure out a way to improve our immigration system,” he said.
