Michelle Obama swears off french fries
First lady Michelle Obama swore off eating french fries on Friday after President Obama told a crowd of children she has a a weakness for the high-calorie food.
“I’m making a vow, I’m going to take a break from French Fries,” she said.
Obama, for his part, admitted he can’t control himself around chips and guacamole.
“When I see a bowl of chips and guacamole, I lose my mind,” the president said.
{mosads}The president made a surprise appearance at the White House Kids’ State Dinner, an annual event thrown by the first lady to celebrate healthy school lunches, shortly after speaking to the press corps about the downed Malaysia Airlines jet in Ukraine.
Attendees at the lunch won a national recipe contest with meals that adhere to the Agriculture Department’s new healthy lunch standards. Those requirements have been at the heart of an ongoing feud between the first lady and congressional Republicans, who want to allow some schools to opt out of the healthier requirements.
The president admitted the first family sometimes likes to indulge in junk food. He said daughter Malia likes ice cream and that Sasha enjoys sushi and pie.
The president told the children that the most important thing when it comes to food is moderation.
“If children eat a balanced diet, he said, “then having fun food that may not be perfect for you, that’s OK, too.”
