Sunday tipsheet: VA scandal sucks up political oxygen
The ongoing inquiry into the Veterans Affairs scandal will highlight the Sunday talk shows.
Here’s the lineup:
ABC’s “This Week” will discuss the latest on the VA scandal with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America founder and CEO Paul Rieckhoff. Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff will also sit-down for an exclusive interview this Memorial Day weekend. Host George Stephanopoulos will speak with former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman on U.S.-China relations, after the U.S. Justice Department charged five Chinese military officers with spying. Huntsman served as ambassador to China under President Obama.
NBC’s “Meet the Press” – Pre-empted by Formula One auto racing.
CBS’ “Face the Nation” will talk about what the nation can do to improve veterans care with Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), John Thune (R-S.D.) and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), who served as a veteran in Iraq and Afghanistan. Blumenthal thinks the FBI should get involved in preserving evidence in the case since there could be criminal implications of misconduct.
To commemorate Memorial Day, Dana Priest of the Washington Post will join the panel, whose reporting on poor treatment of wounded veterans at Walter Reed Hospital won a Pulitzer Prize.
CNN’s “State of the Union” will talk about the VA scandal with chairmen of the Senate and House Veteran Affairs Committees, Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Miller says allegations of delayed care and falsified books at Veterans Affairs health care facilities are “just the tip of the iceberg. On the other hand, Sen. Bernie Sanders, (I-Vt.) urges his colleagues not to “politicize the wellbeing of America’s heroes” while they uncover the investigation.
Indiana’s Republican Governor Mike Pence, a possible 2016 presidential contender, will talk about his change of heart on ObamaCare and if Washington politics is tarnishing the GOP brand.
“Fox News Sunday” will discuss the allegations and investigation of the VA scandal with Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), who sits on the Armed Services Committee. Chief of Staff of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America Derek Bennett will also share his views.
