Police detonate backpacks at Boston Marathon finish line

Police have blown up two unattended backpacks found near the Boston Marathon’s finish line and took one man into custody in connection with them, according to the Associated Press.

Police said the backpacks were discovered and detonated “for precautionary reasons’’ Tuesday evening, a year after a bomb attack killed three people and injured hundreds more at the same location.

{mosads}Boston Police Department spokesperson David Estrada was not sure what might have been in the backpacks and was not sure how the items were detonated. “They have different methods – sometimes water cannon, sometimes a little bit of explosives,” he said, according to USA TODAY.

Earlier in the day, survivors and relatives of last year’s bombing joined public officials and others to commemorate the Boston Marathon bombing’s one year anniversary.

Vice President Biden, who attended a service, said the survivors were living proof the United States would never yield to terrorism.
