Immigration activists step up deportation fight

Dozens of immigration advocates across the country are rallying Saturday to urge the Obama administration to suspend deportations, which have reached record highs under the president’s administration.

Marches, vigils and demonstrations are being held in more than 40 cities as part of the national “Day of Action” initiative. Organizers say President Obama has the executive power to freeze deportations — almost at 2 million — that separate illegal immigrants from their loved ones.

{mosads}In Eloy, Ariz., numerous supporters traveled more than 60 miles from Phoenix to converge in front of a federal detention center, according to the Associated Press.

Obama has softened his position on deportation over time, calling Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to review the administration’s deportation policies in March.
