Poll: Public not yet ready for Colorado pot law

Only a third of people say Colorado’s new law legalizing the sale of marijuana is a good idea, a new poll shows.

Twenty-nine percent said the law is a bad idea, according to a CNN/ORC International survey released late Wednesday.

{mosads}Nearly 40 percent, meanwhile, said they’re undecided and want to see how other states approach the issue.

Although federal law currently makes the sale or possession of marijuana illegal, only 28 percent said those rules should be enforced in Colorado. Seven in 10 people surveyed said the government shouldn’t enforce the federal law in Colorado.

Nearly 80 percent of the public, the poll indicates, said people caught with pot should have to pay a fine and not serve jail time.

This poll comes just a few days after CNN released a separate survey indicating 55 percent said the sale of marijuana should be made legal nationwide.

Colorado recently became the first state to allow retail recreational sales of marijuana to adults age 21 and older.
