Durbin tumor not cancerous
Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin’s stomach tumor was
not cancerous, an
aide said Tuesday.
Christina Mulka, a spokeswoman for Durbin (D-Ill.), confirmed reports that a tumor removed from Durbin’s stomach was benign. Doctors had not found signs of cancer before Durbin underwent surgery on Aug. 12, but the type of tumor he had can be cancerous.
Durbin, the second-ranking Senate Democrat, underwent surgery in Chicago to remove a small gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) discovered during a routine check-up.
The Illinois Democrat was released from the hospital the evening of Aug. 13 and is not expected to need additional treatment.
