White House keeping in close contact with states after deadly storms
The Obama administration announced Saturday that it would send additional federal officials to states devastated by recent tornadoes.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and others will head to Alabama and Mississippi which have recently been devastated by a series of tornadoes, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Additionally, FEMA announced that National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) administrator Jane Lubchenco would be on the ground in Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday.
The announcement comes a day after President Obama visited Alabama to survey the damage from the tornadoes which resulted in the deaths of at least 300 people.
“I’ve never seen devastation like this,” Obama said while visiting parts Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Friday.
Obama met with family members affected by the storms as well as local officials. During his touring of the devastated areas Obama promised “maximum” help to the area.
The president has declared major disasters in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.
