Maine lawmaker apologizes over implied threat to harm Trump

A Maine state lawmaker is apologizing after he suggested in a Facebook post that he would harm President Trump if he had the chance.

Democratic Maine State Rep. Scott Hamann wrote in a long Facebook post Tuesday that “Trump is a half term president, at most, especially if I ever get within 10 feet of that p—y,” according to the Bangor Daily News.

Hamann apologized for the apparent threat in a statement Wednesday, saying that he made the “aggressively sarcastic” comments in an exchange with “a childhood friend.”

“This is not language I typically use, it does not reflect my personal values and, while misguided, it was intended to make a visceral point about the devolving political discourse in America,” Hamann said.

The Secret Service told the Bangor Daily News that they were aware of the post but have not opened an investigation into the incident.

It is a crime to threaten the president.

Maine GOP Chairwoman Demi Kouzounas called for Hamann’s resignation over the “unhinged comments.”

“Words cannot even begin to describe the level of revulsion I feel after reading Representative Scott Hamann’s recent tirade that has come to light,” Kouzounas said in a statement. “Perhaps the most alarming aspect of this tirade is an implied death threat against our president.”
