Trump congratulates France’s Macron

President Trump spoke with Emmanuel Macron on Monday to congratulate France’s president-elect on his weekend victory, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said.

Both leaders agreed to meet during a NATO leaders’ summit in Brussels later this month, according to the White House.

Macron, leader of the center-left En Marche Party, defeated far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen over the weekend.

Le Pen was viewed as a populist insurgent in the vein of Trump.

Trump did not endorse a French candidate but had said he believed a terror attack in Paris last month would boost Le Pen, who has taken a hard-line stance opposing immigration.

Former President Barack Obama backed Macron ahead of Saturday’s runoff election.

The White House has pledged that Trump would work with whomever the French people elected.
