Sessions considering run for old Alabama Senate seat: report

PBS News

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions is considering running for his old Alabama Senate seat in 2020, sources tell Politico.

President Trump dismissed Sessions as attorney general Wednesday after months of publicly complaining about and insulting the Justice Department head, who left the Senate for the job.

{mosads}Sessions’s old seat was won by Democratic Sen. Doug Jones in a special election last year. Jones is running for reelection in 2020 to attain a full term, but he is considered particularly vulnerable because of the Cotton State’s strong Republican tilt.

Sessions spent two decades in the Seante and is well liked by his GOP colleagues there. Although he has strong name recognition in his home state, party officials tell Politico that his standing has taken a hit in light of Trump’s attacks on him regarding his decision to recuse himself from the Justice Department’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Trump won Alabama by nearly 30 points in 2016 and remains popular there, too.
