MORNING READ

As pundits predict Barack Obama winning the White House come Nov. 4, the post-election future of the GOP is a point of debate for bloggers this morning. A plot by two white supremacists to assassinate Obama, meanwhile, has disturbed others in the blogosphere.

A war is brewing over the future of the Republican Party beyond 2008, Phoenix Woman declares at Firedoglake. The blogger sees two factions of the party, which she calls TheoCons and CorporateCons, duking it out for control of the GOP. Only time will tell what the GOP will look like after four or eight years if Obama wins, Soren Dayton proposes at The Next Right, while his colleague Jon Henke wonders if former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) or former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) could end up chairing the Republican National Committee after 2008.

The assassination plot hatched by two Tennessee men and thwarted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is very disturbing, writes AMERICAblog’s Joe Sudbay. TalkLeft’s TChris agrees, while noting that the plot doesn’t appear to have gotten very far. The Tennessee GOP, meanwhile, irks Political Animal’s Steve Benen by making reference to an effigy hanging of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) in a statement condemning the plot.

And Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D) has landed an endorsement from a prominent conservative blog following Sen. Ted Stevens’s (R-Alaska) guilty verdict yesterday. RedState’s directors write that party loyalty has its limits and good conscience prevents them from supporting Stevens after he was found guilty of corruption.
