Gov. Martinez: Female president ‘long past due’

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) on Monday said the time for a female president is “long past due.”

Martinez, the first female Hispanic governor said, however, that she is not a candidate for the job, according to Real Clear Politics. 

{mosads}“I’m the first female Hispanic governor in the country, and being that first female Hispanic governor in the country, with it comes a lot of responsibility,” she said. “And I have to do the job of being governor for New Mexico right. There are a lot of little girls watching, and because there are a lot of little girls watching, I can’t walk away from a position not having accomplished the things I said I was going to do.”

When asked if she would consider a vice presidential nomination, she said, “I’m so focused on New Mexico.”

Martinez hit the campaign trail with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) a day before the polls open in his state. He is expected to easily slide to victory. 

Though there was early speculation that Martinez could be a possible vice presidential candidate with Mitt Romney in 2012, she continuously denied that she would take the position. 

In 2012, Martinez said serving as the guardian of her developmentally disabled sister would prevent her from living away from New Mexico. 

Any speculation about a female president in 2016 focuses strongly on the Democratic side on Hillary Clinton. She has received a number of early endorsements this year, even before deciding on a run. 

Martinez, who holds high approval numbers in her Democratic-leaning state, is up for reelection in 2014.
