Hickenlooper laughs off lack of recognition by security guard at Democratic debate

Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D), who is running for the White House in 2020, does not appear to be offended by security not recognizing him as a presidential candidate ahead of the Wednesday night debate in Miami. 

{mosads}Hickenlooper was asked if he was picking up his press credentials when he showed up Wednesday afternoon, according to NPR reporter Scott Detrow. 

“I’m a candidate,” Hickenlooper responded.

About an hour later, the former governor laughed about the situation with reporters. 

He told ABC’s Rick Klein, “Story of my life.”

“I’m just a humble brewer,” Hickenlooper said.

The long-shot candidate leaned into his status as a relative unknown, referencing President Trump, the “famous candidate,” who won in 2016.

“Last time, we elected the most famous candidate. Let’s try something new,” Hickenlooper quipped.

Hickenlooper’s campaign did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment. 

Hickenlooper is one of 24 candidates seeking the party nomination. Twenty candidates will participate in the first round of debates Wednesday and Thursday in Florida.

Hickenlooper, who has been polling in the low single digits, will appear on stage Thursday, along with some of the top candidates in the field including former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
