Mueller wants to interview Russian pop star who helped set up Trump Tower meeting: report

Special counsel Robert Mueller has been in talks with the lawyer for a Russian pop star who helped facilitate the 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer.

NBC News reported Thursday that the lawyer for Emin Agalarov said “conversations are ongoing” about a potential interview of the Russian pop star with the special counsel’s office.

A spokesman for Mueller’s office declined to comment, according to NBC.

The 2016 Trump meeting started coming together after Agalarov notified publicist Rob Goldstone that Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya had incriminating information about then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Goldstone later reached out to Trump Jr., who agreed to meet with Veselnitskaya at Trump Tower in June 2016. Trump Jr. has downplayed the meeting, saying it was about Russian adoption policy related to American sanctions and describing it as a “waste of time.”

The meeting, which was not made public until summer 2017, has become a flashpoint in Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

President Trump has denied knowing about the meeting. However, his claim received renewed scrutiny last week when his former attorney, Michael Cohen, claimed that the president was aware of the meeting.

Rudy Giuliani, the president’s lead attorney in the Russia investigation, has blasted Cohen’s claim as “flat-out untrue.”

Agalarov released a music video earlier this year making fun of the president over allegations he’s faced since taking office. The video for his song, “Got Me Good,” takes place in a setting resembling Trump Tower, and includes a Trump impersonator and a reference to adult-film star Stormy Daniels, who alleges she had an affair with the president in 2006.
