Canadian officials identify suspect in Toronto shooting

Canadian authorities on Monday identified the suspect in a deadly shooting in Toronto the night before as Faisal Hussain, a resident of the city.

Police said Hussain, 29, died after opening fire on a busy Toronto street late Sunday, killing two people and injuring a dozen others. It remains unclear if Hussain shot himself or was killed by police.

Hussain’s family said in a statement that he struggled with “severe mental health challenges,” including “psychosis and depression his entire life,” according to CBS News.

{mosads}“We are utterly devastated by the incomprehensible news that our son was responsible for the senseless violence and loss of life that took place on the Danforth,” the family said.

According to the Globe and Mail in Toronto, the shooting spree began about 10 p.m. on busy Danforth Avenue when a man started firing at pedestrians before shooting into crowded restaurants.

Toronto Mayor John Tory delivered a speech in the aftermath of the shooting calling on the city council to consider debate on gun-control measures, calling it a “discussion worth having.”

“This is an international problem and this is a domestic problem. There are far too many people carrying around guns in our city and our region who should not have them,” he said.
