Pepe the Frog has disappeared from neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer in response to a legal challenge from the cartoon’s creator.
All images of the infamous cartoon frog have now been removed from the website, according to CNET, in compliance with Digital Millennium Copyright Act requests.
{mosads}Matt Furie, the artist who created Pepe in 2005, has successfully fought several legal battles to stop “alt-right” figures and publications from using the image.
Furie’s lawyers told CNET that getting the Daily Stormer to take down the images proved difficult, as the website has switched web hosts and moved to the so-called deep web multiple times. The website, run by notorious neo-Nazi Andrew Anglin, did not respond directly to Furie’s requests.
Furie created Pepe in 2005, but in recent years the cartoon has been adopted as symbol of alt-right communities and was widely shared ahead of the 2016 election by far-right supporters of President Trump.
Furie has also sued InfoWars for the use of his image and successfully stopped distribution of an alt-right children’s book that used Pepe.
