Man arrested in connection with suspicious packages sent to military installations near DC
The FBI arrested a man on Tuesday who is believed to be responsible for sending multiple suspicious packages to military installations around Washington, D.C.
The Washington Post reported that the man was arrested in the Seattle area and is scheduled to appear later Tuesday in federal court. Investigators are still trying to determine the man’s motive for allegedly sending packages that contained explosive materials.
The FBI did not provide the man’s name.
{mosads}The bureau opened an investigation on Monday after a half-dozen suspicious packages arrived at military installations and intelligence addresses around Washington, D.C.
Fort Belvoir in Virginia and Fort McNair in Washington each received a suspicious package.
The box sent to the National Defense University at Fort McNair reportedly tested positive for black powder and residue and had a fuse attached.
The building was evacuated and cleared for re-entry by 1:15 p.m., CNN reported.The package at Fort Belvoir was rendered safe.
The packages were sent to Washington, D.C., shortly after a bomb scare swept Austin, Texas. Multiple package explosions there in recent weeks killed two people and injured several others.
The suspected Austin bomber was identified last week as Mark Anthony Conditt, who killed himself as police closed in on him while he was in his vehicle.
