UCLA releases video of Mnuchin getting heckled during speech
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has released video of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin being heckled during his appearance at the school last month, despite initial protests from Mnuchin about making it public.
The video, posted Friday on the school’s website, shows Mnuchin delivering remarks to students on the economy and the Trump administration’s policies. The video shows multiple attendees yelling at Mnuchin about the GOP tax bill and the administration’s approach to North Korea before being escorted out of the auditorium.
{mosads}Mnuchin spent the second half of his roughly hourlong visit to the Burkle Center for International Relations doing a question-and-answer session with Marketplace.org radio host Kai Ryssdal.
Students periodically jeered Mnuchin as he answered questions. Ryssdal encouraged Mnuchin to ignore the hecklers, but Mnuchin responded, “I think they’re going to get more tired than I am.”
After the event, Mnuchin retracted his permission for the school to post video and audio of the event to the internet, a UCLA spokeswoman told The Wall Street Journal.
BuzzFeed News reported that the Treasury Department told the school on Friday it supported the full release of the video.
“Our prior objection was providing a platform for the non-student protestors, who sought to disrupt the event, at the expense of the otherwise thoughtful discussion,” a Treasury spokesperson told BuzzFeed in a statement.
