Michigan police to apologize for being ‘deceived by Nassar’

Police in Michigan have scheduled a press conference for Thursday to apologize to a woman who complained to them that disgraced doctor Larry Nassar had sexually abused her. 

Meridian police plan to apologize to Brianne Randall-Gay after they did not refer her complaint 13 years ago to a prosecutor, NBC News reported. The town will also outline new initiatives for handling sex crimes investigations.

“We were wrong in 2004. We were deceived by Nassar,” Meridian Town Manager Frank Walsh told NBC. “And when you do something wrong you admit it, and you make it better.”

Nassar told police at the time he was performing a medical procedure, and his standing in the community helped prevent police from reporting the incident, NBC News reported. {mosads}

Randall-Gay said the apology is “not enough” because police could have prevented further abuse by reporting her complaint.

Nassar was sentenced last week to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexually abusing more than 150 young female athletes while he worked for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University. A total of 156 victims, including Randall-Gay, testified that they sought treatment from Nassar for sports injuries and were sexually assaulted.

The entire board of directors for USA Gymnastics resigned, and multiple Michigan State University officials resigned after several former students testified that Nassar abused them while he worked at the school as a doctor.
