White House aides told to decide whether staying in administration: report

White House aides have been given a deadline to decide whether they will stay in the administration, CNN reported on Tuesday. 

The staffers have been told they have until the end of the month to decide whether they will leave or stay in their posts until after the November midterm elections, according to the network.

A White House source told CBS News that the notifications could be aimed at helping chief of staff John Kelly impose order on a number of rumored upcoming departures, allowing him to stagger the staffers leaving as he seeks replacements. 

The White House has seen an unprecedented number of departures this year, at a record 34 percent, according to The Wall Street Journal, including a number of senior staffers and advisers. 

The chief of staff is reportedly working to fill a number of vacant positions by the end of January. 

Kelly himself dropped his position as secretary of Homeland Security to replace fired chief of staff Reince Priebus, who left in July shortly before former chief strategist Stephen Bannon and deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka were forced out in August.
