Colbert jokes that he finally agrees with McConnell: ‘Is this a dream?’
Late-night host Stephen Colbert joked that he finally agrees with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who said on Monday that he believes the women who have accused Republican Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore of sexual misconduct.
Colbert played a clip of McConnell saying “I believe the women, yes” at a news conference earlier in the day.
“What is this strange feeling?” joked Colbert, placing his hand over his heart. “I’m not sure if this is the word; I … agree with Mitch McConnell?” he said incredulously. “Is this a dream? Somebody pinch me, just not Roy Moore.”

McConnell said at the news conference that he believes Moore should “step aside” after several women accused Moore of sexual misconduct with them when they were teenagers in the 1970s. Beverly Young Nelson said that Moore sexually assaulted her; Leigh Corfman alleged that Moore engaged in a sexual encounter with her; and three other women said Moore pursued relationships with them. Moore was in his 30s during the time of these alleged incidents.
The Senate majority leader said that the GOP is considering backing a write-in candidate for the Alabama Senate seat, as Moore has refused to step down from the race. Republicans have also discussed delaying the election, as a state law prohibits Moore from being removed from the ballot so close to the vote.
